Abstract

Structural transformations in information and communication technologies have fundamentally redefined the practices of political and social participation, profoundly affecting the functioning of the public sphere. Within this context, digitalization emerges as a critical factor reshaping the existing dynamics of women’s political and social participation. The widespread adoption of digital tools facilitates women’s access to political processes, enabling diversified forms of engagement and increasing public visibility. Digital platforms provide functional spaces for expressing political demands, developing collective action strategies, and constructing alternative public spheres.

However, digital participation processes also represent domains in which gender-based inequalities—such as disparities in access, digital harassment, and online discrimination—are reproduced. The

effects of digitalization on women’s empowerment thus point to a multidimensional phenomenon that must be analyzed within this dual framework. While digitalization has the potential to enhance women’s access to information, representation in public spaces, and collective mobilization capacities, it cannot be understood independently of structural inequalities. This study examines the relationship between digitalization, gender, and participation from a theoretical perspective, offering a comprehensive assessment of the transformation of women’s political and social positions and establishing a conceptual foundation for future academic research.
